aplasia (noun) Atrophy of a tissue or organ.
Meaning and uses
The aplasia is halting the development of a tissue or organ that occurs after birth.
Transient state of a patient whose blood (due to illness or treatment) contains almost no blood cells. There is talk of aplastic anemia: stopping operation of the bone marrow stops producing blood stem cells.
(Literally ‘no construction’). Absence of formation of an organ or a fragment of an organ.
Momentary decrease in the rate of production by the bone marrow red blood cells, white cells and platelets, one or several cell types, where an effect on the blood count. The aplasia may be caused, for a bone marrow transplant.
very sharp decrease in white blood cells, accompanied by a decrease in other blood components (red cells and platelets). This is a temporary side effect of some chemotherapy drugs.
significant decrease in blood cells, often caused by chemotherapy.
