appendices
Appendix (noun) Extending a main part. That is, what we add one thing. Extension of the cecum. The appendix is a small diverticulum at the tip of the cecum. Because of its shape reminiscent of a worm, it was called vermiform appendix. It is generally accepted that the appendix has played a role in the digestion of hard materials, such as chitin from insects or bark, in our distant ancestors. Today, it is more than a vestigial organ that has lost its usefulness. Inflammation of the appendix gives rise to appendicitis, and its removal is one of the most common surgeries performed.
